Psychotherapy CPD – Analytical Psychotherapy Training Birmingham
APT Birmingham is committed to supporting the ongoing professional growth of psychotherapists through Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Our programmes allow practitioners to fulfill professional development requirements while expanding their knowledge and clinical skills in analytical psychotherapy and related approaches.
CPD Opportunities at APT Birmingham
The Analytical Psychotherapy Training at the West Midlands Institute of Psychotherapy, founded in 1990, provides a structured learning experience designed to develop competent and responsible practitioners. In support of this, the Training Committee encourages a lively, open-minded, and well-informed culture of analytical psychotherapy in Birmingham and the West Midlands, including an annual series of public lectures.
Our CPD offerings align with the training pathways of the Institute:
-
Four-Year Analytical Psychotherapy Training – A clinical qualifying programme leading to BPC registration and professional membership.
-
Introduction to Analytical Psychotherapy Course – For individuals interested in engaging with the principles of analytical psychotherapy without beginning a full qualifying training.
-
Two-Year Infant Observation Training – Structured observational study to deepen understanding of early development and relational dynamics.

Philosophy of Training and CPD
Effective CPD in analytical psychotherapy recognises that good practice relies not only on sound theoretical knowledge but also on the authenticity and creativity of the practitioner’s self-knowledge and participation in the analytic process. The CPD programmes at APT Birmingham encourage the development of personal authority, enabling trainees to navigate a diversity of approaches to analytical psychotherapy.
True to Jung’s philosophy, our CPD emphasises the ongoing development of autonomous individuals who contribute to a therapeutic culture rather than conforming to an orthodoxy of analytical theory and practice. While grounded in the theories of C.G. Jung and post-Jungian developments, the training also integrates psychoanalytic and object-relations theory. Each topic is taught by specialists, ensuring a rich, diverse, and deeply informed professional development experience.
