The Analytical Psychotherapy Training leading to BPC Registration

Course Structure

1. Pre-Clinical Year

This is the pre-clinical stage of the training and normally lasts one year.

The Seminar programme

The formal teaching, reading seminars take place on Saturdays usually between 10.15 a.m. – 3.15 p.m., in up to three one and a quarter hour seminars.

The Public Lecture programme

This is a series of five lectures by experienced Jungian practitioners. The lectures are open to the wider Jungian community in the Midlands and further afield, as well as to the public. They take place on Saturday mornings in Birmingham.

Personal Analytical Psychotherapy

Trainees are engaged in their own analysis on a three times weekly basis.

Annual Essay

The purpose of the first essay is to demonstrate that the trainee has begun to engage creatively with the material presented on the course.

Trainee’s Annual Assessment of Learning

The assessment process of the course rests on the fact that the trainee is responsible for his or her learning. At the end of each year every trainee is required to write an assessment of his or her own work and learning during the previous year in relation to his or her development. The trainee writes an assessment having had the opportunity to think about the assessment of his or her work made by others such as supervisors and essay readers.

Termly Tutorials

Each trainee has a tutor who is a member of the Training Committee. Regular tutorials are offered as a space on which to reflect upon progress on the training and to support the trainee in his or her development.

Psychiatric Placement

During the pre-clinical year, all trainees must complete a six month psychiatric placement of half a day per week.

2. Clinical Stage

Once the Pre-Clinical year has been completed and its requirements successfully fulfilled, a trainee progresses to the Clinical Stage of the Training. This comprises a further two years of the full seminar programme. On reaching the fourth year, trainees will become part of a separate year group, which will meet less frequently. It will be more tailored to the needs of senior trainees and include the opportunity to re-visit the subject areas on the seminar programme where they would benefit from further study as well as to choose collectively in their year group areas where they would like more guided reading, pertinent to the needs of more advanced training. It may take longer than this to complete all the clinical requirements.

Clinical seminars

These are regular opportunities for a trainee to present his or her clinical work with a patient for discussion to the seminar group under the direction of an experienced practitioner.

Clinical work with Training Cases

Trainees are required to work with three adult training patients during the clinical stage. These include patients who attend therapy on a once, twice and three times weekly basis. Six monthly reports are required on all training patients and, in the case of the two and three times weekly cases, these must be submitted until qualification.

Supervision of clinical work

Trainees have weekly supervision with an experienced Jungian analytical psychotherapist/analyst on each training case.

Biennial Clinical Paper and Final Clinical Paper

In the clinical stage, trainees are required to write a biennial clinical paper describing their work with a patient. When all other course requirements are met, a longer, final clinical paper is presented.
